Navigating Thanksgiving with ADHD

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and, of course, food. However, for children with ADHD, the holiday can present unique challenges, especially when it comes to managing nutrition and impulse control.

Here are some tips to help your child navigate Thanksgiving:

  1. Plan Ahead:

    1. Talk it Out: Have an open conversation with your child about the upcoming holiday. Discuss what they can expect, including the types of food that will be available.

    2. Set Expectations: Set clear expectations about mealtime behavior, such as sitting at the table and using utensils.

    3. Practice Portion Control: Use smaller plates to help control portion sizes.

    4. Make it a Practice Meal: If your child is very picky, you can practice Thanksgiving dinner with them before the big day. You can serve a meal with the sights, sounds, and smells of Thanksgiving.

  2. Mindful Eating:

    1. Start Slow: Encourage your child to start with a small amount of food and eat slowly.

    2. Focus on the Food: Limit distractions during mealtime, such as TV, games, or phones.

    3. Listen to Their Body: Teach your child to recognize hunger and fullness cues.

  3. Healthy Snack Options:

    1. Pre-Plan: Pack healthy snacks, like fruits, vegetables, or yogurt, to keep your child satisfied before or after the meal.

    2. Limit Processed Foods: Avoid sugary drinks, high volumes of dessert and processed snacks, as they can lead to energy crashes and impulsive behavior.

  4. Manage Sensory Overload:

    1. Create a Calm Space: If your child becomes overwhelmed, provide a quiet space where they can retreat.

    2. Sensory Tools: Consider using sensory tools, like fidget toys or weighted blankets, to help regulate their emotions.

  5. Positive Reinforcement:

    1. Reward Good Behavior: Use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior during mealtimes.

    2. Avoid Power Struggles: Focus on positive interactions and avoid negative consequences.

By following these tips, you can help your child enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday without compromising their nutritional needs or mental health. Remember, patience and understanding are key.
